Gambler was an extraordinary dog and an extraordinary Great Dane, and was loved and admired by many. For all of his great size, he had a very gentle nature. Although he had a strong desire to please, he hated the show ring and was retired with 3 American points and 7 Canadian points toward his championships.

He was my shadow and my guardian, always placing himself where he could watch over me. At night, he slept at the foot of my bed, between me and the bedroom door. He was never comfortable sleeping anywhere else.  During the day, he watched over me from his bed in the living room, where he could watch me move about the house without having to move with me. He often accompanied me to work, laying quietly on his bed next to my desk, and taking me for frequent walks down the street.

In February 2003 he bloated and torsioned. I was at home when it happened, and thanks to quick action and a wonderful vet, there was no serious damage and he came through surgery successfully. However, his health was never the same and he had a series of health problems afterwards that compromised his quality of life and ended in his passing in February 2004.

Gambler brought so much to my life and taught me so much, and he took a large chunk of my heart with him when he left. I will always miss him terribly, but am so thankful to have had him with me for 6 years.
